Baltimore Rowing Club, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Neptune Yacht Club Join Forces to Help Baltimore's Children.
Baltimore, MD May 22, 2004-–The genesis for this unlikely coalition was an idea from an Auxiliarist who wished to increase membership in his local Auxiliary flotilla. "Many of our flotilla members are getting older, and not only have we not recruited in recent years, we haven't done a good job of alerting the community to our existence" said Auxiliarist Andrew Mack, Marine Safety & Environment Staff Officer in the Auxiliary and co-coordinator of the event. "We wanted to increase our exposure to the demographic that included adults with school-aged children, and decided that designing an event that appeals to the children would be an effective strategy to introduce ourselves to the parents".
Mack then contacted the leadership at the Baltimore Rowing Club and the Neptune Yacht Club to solicit their participation. "The Rowing Club already had a fishing derby in the works, so our job was to take the fishing derby and create an event around it. So we brought in another stakeholder, the Neptune Yacht Club, which, I believe, is the oldest African-American yacht club in Baltimore. Their Commander was very excited about the idea, and agreed to it instantly. This is their 50th anniversary, and activities like this help to fulfill their goal of giving back to the community" stated Mack.
Mack then reiterated his invitation to bring children to the Baltimore Rowing Club on Saturday, May 22, 2004 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. "Do a little fishing, listen to the music, attend a class. It's all free and you just might enjoy yourself" he said with a chuckle. "In this time of cutbacks, scandals, and fear, we're just trying to do something positive for children. Isn't that what it's all about?"
